St. Virgilius/BCAC Baseball Sweep Continues Fast Start

This past Saturday saw the St. Virgilius/Broad Channel Athletic Club Intermediate girls back in action as they took both games of a double header against a shorthanded Our Lady of Hope team.

Game one saw St. Virgilius put runs on the board first in the second inning with hits by Nancy Soliman, Caitlin Mammes, and Katie Mc Intyre for three runs. Our Lady of Hope answered with four runs in the third inning for a 4-3 lead.

St. Virgilius would open up the scoring in the fourth inning on Katie Gills' two run homer. Hits by Sydney Acevedo, Christina Sullivan, Nancy Soliman, Caitlin Mammes and Katie McIntyre would produce three more runs for a 8-4 lead.

In the seventh inning, back to back triples by St. Virgilius' Nancy Soliman, Caitlin Mammes and a single by Katie Mac would put up two more runs for a 10-4 lead. Our Lady of Hope would not go down without a fight managing to keep the bases loaded and put across three runs before the St. Virgilius girls managed to retire the side and hold on for a 10-7 victory.

In game two, the St. Virgilius girls opened the scoring quickly. With Patricia Kelly on base, Shannon Minihane hit a two run home run to make it 2-0. Sydney Acevedo, Christina Servello and Nancy Soliman produced base hits for a 4-0 lead. Our Lady of Hope put a run on the board in the third inning to make it a 4-1 game. St. Virgilius would add to their lead in the third inning when Shannon Minihane hit a single to drive in Patricia Kelly.

Our Lady of Hope would be a constant threat by consistently loading the bases from the fourth inning on. They could only put two runs across the plate as St. Virgiulis got big plays from their infield defense. The outfield work was superb by Kaitlyn Manzi and Courtney Gallagher, who prevented Our Lady of Hope from scoring any more for a final 5-3 victory. The team would like to thank the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department for the loan of a generator to help the team get rid of the pond which flooded centerfield.
