Congratulations To Barbara Hillary

Dear Editor,

My congratulations and well wishes to Barbara Hillary of Arverne, for being the first black woman, at age 75, to visit the North Pole. I sincerely hope that the frostbite incurred heals totally, as I know how painful and disabling that affliction can be!

Barbara is the second Rockawayite that I know of who has been at zero degrees north position, on our globe called Earth.

Just about a century ago, a former milkman from Seaside was the first to discover the location of the North Pole, and was involved in a dispute over the historic event for some time.

His rival was Admiral Robert E. Peary, who for reasons of ego, and some early political correctness by officials and various media barons, gave all the credit to Peary, the sore loser!

In my Postcard History Series book, recently published by Arcadia Publishing and titled The Rockaways, a postcard appears honoring both these brave men in the chapter covering the Seaside section. Move over fellas, you have company!
