Career Day At Public School/Middle School 183
The NYC Fire Department, Police Department, EMS Services, nurses, dentists, business owners, actors and representatives of various organizations in the Rockaway community and beyond donated their time to introduce their careers to students from pre-K through eighth grade. Speakers also included the Senior Pastor of St. John Baptist Church and representatives from local political offices, which included an assistant from Mayor Bloomberg's office.
Acommittee of staff members, coordinated by Ms. Strauss and Ms. Romero, were able to encourage the notable volunteers to speak to students about how to achieve future goals. Guest speakers discussed some of the obstacles they faced as children, and how they overcame them in order to be productive members of society.
For the middle school students, the Career Day encouraged them to choose their goals and subjects seriously for their future careers. Students not only received hope and direction from the guests, but they received answers about what it takes to be in specific careers. It was an exciting day for students, teachers, staff and volunteers who helped guide the guests through the school corridors.
