High School Roundup: BCHS Crowned Tennis Champs
      Last year, the losses and the long travel were some of the factors that added up to a dismal 0-12 tennis season for the Beach Channel men's team. One year later, the tide has turned. After a move from the PSAL 'A' to the 'B' Division, the Dolphins clinched an undefeated season and a Queens B1 title in thrashing Hillcrest 4 sets to 1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Pepper Steppers Compete In State Double-Dutch Championship
      The speedy Stan's Pepper Steppers, representing the Sorrentino Recreational Center, will compete at the American Double Dutch League City/ State Double-Dutch Championship. The event will be held on Saturday, May 5 at IS 219 (Charles Drew School) in the Bronx.

Open High School Basketball Tryouts For Empire State Games
      Any New York City high school basketball player who is looking for some competition during the summer is invited to try out for The Empire State Games. The event, which is the largest multi-sport event for amateur athletes in the nation, will begin on July 25 through July 29 in Westchester County.

Dads Compete In B-Ball Tournament
      Fathers from several public schools across the peninsula are competing in a tournament for Rockaway's Basketball Project, with the first official game taking place at the Goldie Maple Academy on April 13. PS 105 Parent Coordinator Alla Nesmith presented Goldie Maple Academy Principal Angela Logan with the idea of contacting schools in Rockaway and asking them to participate in the tournament.

Rockaway Goes Lacrosse Crazy At Aviator
      Aviator Sports and Recreation Complex and the Long Island Lizards attracted 130 kids to participate in a free youth lacrosse clinic last Saturday afternoon at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. Members and coaching staff of the Long Island Lizards, who play in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) instructed the children on the many aspects of the game.

Broad Channel Athletic Club Seek Photos
      The Broad Channel Athletic Club is looking for people to send their photos of the days when they played ball, cheered, played hockey, coached or swam for the BCAC. They are also seeking any photos from the BCAC's Mardi Gras, running races, swimming races and dances. The BCAC would like to know where their kids continued with their sports after they left the BCAC.

Johnson Twirls First Place Honors In Talent Competition
      Allison-Frances Johnson, age 10, of Belle Harbor won first place honors for the fourth year in a row in the twirling event at the Star Power National Talent Competition held last weekend at East Islip High School in Long Island. Johnson also received a platinum medal for winning the first place trophy and an invitation to participate in the Power Pak Dance Tour.

      The St. Thomas More Fourth Grade Girls recently captured the CYO volleyball championship. They finished sixth out of ten teams in the regular season, but with hard work and determination, the team worked its way through the playoffs to get to the championship game.

Brazil Shines As Peninsula Cup Soccer Kicks Off
      It was an outstanding inaugural week for the Peninsula World Cup Soccer League with the teams from Brazil shining the brightest. The Peninsula World Cup is a joint venture between St. Thomas More and St. Francis de Sales. Almost 500 children are competing in eight age groups. Each team is named for a World Cup country. All games are played at Ft. Tilden or Roxbury.

St.Virgilius Cadet Boys Get Off To Roaring Start
      The baseball season is back in full swing and the St. Virgilius Cadet boys from Broad Channel are off to a hot start. They won their opener on April 14 with a 10-6 victory over Our Lady of Hope. The Cadets displayed a little rust and some opening day jitters in the first inning when OLH scored 4 runs.

BCAC/JBLL Shamrocks Baseball Gets Underway
      This year, the Broad Channel Athletic Club/Jamaica Bay Little League in conjunction with the St. Virgilius Parish is sponsoring several teams in the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) Baseball and Softball programs. One of the teams, the Sub-Novice boys' baseball team, is comprised of kids who are seven and eight years old. The team is being sponsored by "Sports Depot".
