Waters Rise, But Hearts Don't Sink
+ 12:00 noon on UHF Chs. 35 & 26 Monday - Friday
God was good to us. We must be doing something right to escape with so little harm from the recent Northeaster that blew onto our shores. It must be the beautiful people of Rockaway and, perhaps, all those prayers that were offered up to protect us. I prayed, too, even though I was not among you.
I rode out the storm at the Blue Smoke Standard at their Jazz Festival for families, children and adults with open wine bar, Jazz performers, live auction and buffet, all for the benefit of Lincoln Center Jazz. Most enjoyable. It is an annual event so keep it in mind.
Never much of a veggie eater, but that is the rave today. However, when I attended a Vegan tasting I was very much surprised. I didn't know what I was eating, but ne thing was more delicious than the other. I could swear I tasted pork, with the texture and flavor, but to my astonishment, that too was a veggie. They had delicious ice cream that wasn't made from milk and Nana's cookies without gluten for those who are lactose intolerant. There are so many Vegan restaurants popping up all over town. The food is not only healthy for you but good. Try it.
Talk about weather! Easter Sunday it snowed. And, I was one of the marchers in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue with designer Lawrence Levine's beautiful bonnet on my head for the Easter Bonnet Contest that was held at Tavern on the Green in their garden with snow cascading down our brims. It was still a lovely event to view those gorgeous and outrageous chapeaus.
A TRUE HERO…is Welsey Autrie, the subway hero, who threw himself upon the subway tracks on top of a man who fell on the tracks to save his life. You cannot deny that Autrie is a beautiful person. When I met him at a press luncheon at Nino's for the presentation of a Chrysler Jeep for his heroism, I was so impressed with his humility. He is coming in for a TV interview this Friday so watch for him on WNYX TV over the weekend on Channels 26, 32 and 35 from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. sporadically on The New Yorker Show.
Chrysler was in NYC as part of the Auto Show at the Javit's Center and I got to see many of the new cars. Bentley launched its brand new car and only manufactured 550 of them. Imagine the price. A Bentley Limo picked you up at Fifth Avenue to drive you to the Boathouse, which was a gorgeous spot for the party. Porsche displayed their vibrantly colored new cars at the 35th Street showroom across from Javit's. Volvo was rated the safest car because of its headrest.
At Cipriani's they held their fabulous award winning heroes and raised enormous amounts of money to help people. One young lady received $25,000 for her favorite charity from Volvo.
Have you been to the city to see the newly renovated Morgan Library? It is so beautiful and elegant. The celebration of the 26th Anniversary of BOMB magazine was held there. Artist Chuck Close, Jessica Craig- Martin, David Salle, Amy Sullivan, Bill Jensen, actor John Tuturro, playwrights, award winning literati and invited guests joined in the celebration. Of course, Betsy Sussler, Editor in Chief of BOMB, was there, as well as art writers, Michele and Gerber Klien and trustees. BOMB's aim is to reveal intimately and intellectually the creative process through in-depth conversations between peers.
Hosmer Wines, best wines in the Finger Lakes, held a tasting dinner at the Warwick Hotel Murals 54 Restaurant and it was superb. Hosmer won the best Riesling Governor's Cup, Best Sparkling Wine and Best Cabernet and Red Wine. I especially like the Sparkling Wine and Cabernet.
The 21 Club was bustling with travel Agents at a reception for Berlin, Germany. We learned how similar and close life in Berlin is to New York City.
Tartan Week lasted two weeks in NYC and I attended a few of their events with their bagpipes, Fashion Show dressed to Kilt, plenty of scotch whiskey and haggis. Fun time.
But, with all the restaurants in NYC, we have the best right here at Kennedy's. I had a beautiful meal with Helene and Peter Danzilo just before they left for Las Vegas. They got a late start this year because of Helene's health.
She survived a big operation, but is doing fine. Good luck and good health out there.
