Rockaway Beach Special Olympians Go Winter Skiing

The St Camillus Special Olympics - Rockaway Beach Special Athletics team- recently spent a wintry weekend at Ski Windham. On Friday, the athletes and their families participated in a night of tubing and pizza. On both Saturday and Sunday, the athletes spent the day skiing under the instruction of the Adaptive Sports Foundation.
On Saturday night, an awards ceremony was held at the Adaptive Foundation's lodge complete with franks, burgers, etc. cooked by Barry Resnick and Tommy Ryan.
The following Special Olympians received medals for their skiing prowess: Daniel Dorry, Heather Huber, Mary Kate Gorry, Emily Hutton, Joseph Orban, Leanese Salas, Kirsten McMahon, Elizabeth Sena, Jeffrey Resnick, Alana McCarthy, Paul Fitzpatrick, Colette Rup, Paul DeVincenzo, Timothy Mullally, Selena Lanza, Ciara McDonagh, Amanda McKeown, Kevin Reilly, Terence Burke and Patrick Carroll.
Medals were also given to the many youth and adult volunteers for the Olympians' regular Monday night training sessions at St. Camillus Gymnasium who also attended this skiing weekend. They included: Kathy Clarke, Rose Gurry, Jim McVeigh, Christine and Sean Parchment, Danielle Kelly, Matt Dory, Danielle Tesoriero, John Mullally, Paul McDonagh, Danny Gorry, Jay Burke, Jack Mullally, Khalib Lanza, Shinann, Kilby and Bard Featherston, Tommy and Robbie Tyne, Christian Rup, Joseph Featherston, Jr., Annie and Molly Burns and Camille Kelly.
Special thanks must be given to the members of the Rockaway Community who are volunteer instructors for the Adaptive Sports Foundation at Windham.
These include Ed and Mary Ellin Carroll, Flip Mullen, Danielle Stathis, Sean Kearney, Devin Nusyer, J. B. Weber and Rocky Dorogoff. A big thanks goes to Rita and Flip Mullen for their planning efforts in making this weekend so successful for our athletes.
Thanks go to Alice Burke who took care of the food ordering. Councilmember Joe Addabbo also deserves praise because of his allocation of funds from the Department of Youth and Community Development for this trip as does Mary Ellen Olsen of the Graybeards who did the paperwork for that grant.
Finally, we would like to give a huge thanks to the athletes from their many supporters in the Rockaway Community who make this winter experience financially possible.
