Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Holds First Meeting

By Joe McGivney

On Wednesday, 3/28, Punxatawny Cubby and Jimmy Mack came out of their houses, saw their shadows and immediately headed over to the Kerry Hills Pub for the first volleyball meeting of the year. There they met up with dozens of their compatriots from the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League, who were ready to get things started in preparation for the 2007 summer season. Attendance was good and spirits were high in anticipation of the upcoming campaign.

Cubby and Jimmy are looking to repeat their perfect attendance streak of 2006 (not counting the league dinner, of course) and they are off to a good start.

Commissioner Patty Moule and several of her able committee members briskly attended to the important league matters at hand, most notably the collection of $100 deposits from returning teams.

All but a handful of last year's squads came to the meeting to insure their place for 2007. Additionally, several new teams were placed on a waiting list to fill any unclaimed spots.

Early projections call for six different divisions with varying levels of skill. A suggestion was made to realign the teams into more accurate groupings based on drinking ability and to employ more appropriate names like the Heineken, Budweiser, Coors Light and O'Doul's divisions. But no teams were willing to play in the O'Doul's non-alcoholic beverage section. And none are expected in the foreseeable future!

In preparation for the season, the next critical date is fast approaching. Our final meeting will be held on Wednesday, 4/25 at 8:00 PM at the Kerry Hills Pub.

Captains are required to bring the balance of their league fee and their uniform orders. Rosters should be submitted as well. If a captain is unable to attend, he must send a representative (and the money) in his place. The forms will be available on our website, whose address has been simplified to www.rbvl.com.

However, if you missed the first meeting you have a more important date to remember. You must bring your $100 deposit directly to Treasurer, Keith "Bugsy" Goldberg at 446 B. 134th St. by April 8 at the latest. In other words, when you finish reading this article get your butt over there!

Roster and uniform order forms are both available on the website. Do not miss this deadline if you are planning on playing ball at Riis Park this summer!

We asked the captains to do us a big favor by e-mailing your vital information (name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address, team name) and the information for an alternate (or two) from your team.

We have updated our database with all of the information we have received but don't hesitate to let us know of any additional names you'd like added to the mailing list. We're simply looking to improve the speed and accuracy of our announcements and information dissemination.

Prospective new referees are welcome to come to the April 25 meeting if you would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.

You can mark a few special dates on your calendars already. We will hold the final meeting before the season on Wednesday, April 25 at 8:00 PM at Kerry Hills. Rosters, uniform orders and payment in full are due at that time. Wednesday, May 23 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate as it did last year. Wednesday, May 30 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 11. However, this year there will be one exception. Since the 4th of July is a Wednesday, the league has moved the weekly matches to Tuesday, July 3. Make a note on your calendar and get ready for a great night of volleyball followed by an even better party.

On Saturday, August 11, the league championships will be played - keep your schedules clear. Every year it's a blast! Finally, it's never too early to save the date for the RBVL Awards Dinner, which will be held on Friday, September 14.

It will only be a short few weeks before opening day arrives and there is still much to be done beforehand. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 917-566-2809 (Call between 10 AM and 9 PM.).

Also, take two minutes to visit our website and answer 6 questions to help us improve our league. Finally, I have two questions, "Is TBG sporting the new Sanjaya Mohawk haircut?" and "Does Rocky's wooden leg has anything to do with Heather Mills?" See you on April 25.
