Margaret Barto Homemaker

Margaret Barto, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died April 1.

Barto, a homemaker, was born in Rockaway Beach.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph V. and sister, Virginia Parlo.

Barto is survived by her daughters, Margaret M. Barto, Joan Ann Kademoff and Patricia Gallo; sister, Helen Donnelly; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements and visitation were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church. Disposition was kept private.

Elsa Blackman

Nurses Aide

Elsa Blackman, a longtime Rockaway resident, died March 22.

Blackman, a nurses aide, was born in Buxton, Guyana on June 27, 1941.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elaine Hamer, Daniel York and stepfather, Felix Allen; and brother, Roy Hamer.

Blackman is survived by her daughters, Dawn and Debbie; sons, Terry, Frank, David, Colin and Wayne; daughters-in-law, Myrtle, Sharon and Sarika; son-in-law, Courtney; grandchildren, Anthony, Terry, Robert, Paul, Andrew, Justin, Christopher, Deidra, Teneisha, Olivia, Kayla, Gabrielle and Brian; sisters, Yvonne, Maylene, Desiree Ann and Pam; aunts, Elsa, Vashti, Enid and Rita; cousins, Venus, Herman and the Ferreira family, Una and the Corlette family, the Blackman and Leitch family, McLean, Charran, Lynch, Clarke, Ayodeji, Benjamin, and the Hamer family; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements and visitation were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with a service at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Hollywood Park Cemetery in Union, New Jersey.

Christopher Cromwell Sr.

Bus Operator

Christopher Cromwell Sr., a longtime Rockaway resident, died March 19.

Cromwell, a bus operator, was born in Charleston, South Carolina on December 22, 1924. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was an active member of the Masonic Lodge.

Cromwell was preceded in death by his wife, Janie and son, Michael.

He is survived by his sons, Andrew, Christopher Jr. and Jerome (Bobby); daughters, Debbie, Cynthia and Cathy; son-in-law, Mark Watson; grandson, Justin Marcus; brother, Samuel Cromwell; sisters, Ruth Singleton and Genevieve Lafayette; brothers-in-law, Wilmark Campbell, Alex Brown, Percy Brown, Edward Brown and Richard Washington; sisters-in-law, Lillian Campbell, Dorothy Hamilton, Sara Murray and Elizabeth Washington; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements and visitation were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with a service at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York.

Kathryn M. Frank

Registered Nurse

Kathryn M. Frank, a Rockaway resident for more than 65 years, died March 31.

Frank, who was born in Ridgewood, Queens, was a Registered Nurse. She was a parishioner at St. Thomas More-St. Edmund parish.

Frank was preceded in death by her husband, Lester.

She is survived by her sons, Bruce and Lester Frank; grandchildren, Margaret Mary, Regina, Julia, Matthew, Peter, Christopher and Laura; and great-grandchildren, Lyndsey, Corey, Amy, Aaron, Abigal, Ashley and Megan.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Edmund Roman Catholic Church in Breezy Point on Saturday, April 21 at 10:30 a.m. Other funeral arrangements were kept private.

Ellery Darnell Jackson

Sanitation Worker

Ellery Darnell Jackson, a lifelong Far Rockaway resident, died March 25. He was 58.

Jackson was born in Far Rockaway on December 16, 1948. As a child, he loved swimming and received medals for his accomplishments, his family said. He was a sanitation worker.

Jackson is survived by his wife, Elaine Brito Jackson; children, Curtis, Darnell and Serena, grandchildren, Shanice, Darnell "DJ," Maleena, Marcus, Jovon, Justin, Chantal and Anaya; son-in-law, Clayton; daughters-in-law, Myrlande and Shanise; niece, Eva; nephews, Arthur, Gary, Grover and Ronald; and other family members and friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with a service at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Jackson will be cremated by Oxford Hills Crematory in Chester, New York.

Alice Johnson

Nurses Aide

Alice Johnson, a longtime Rockaway resident, died March 23.

Johnson was born in Brooklyn on June 24, 1927. In her early 30s, she became a Jehovah's Witness and remained faithful until her death, according to her family. She worked as a nurses aide.

Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, James and Birtie Cohen; husband, Fred Johnson; and children Fred, Kenneth and Steven.

Johnson is survived by her daughter, Pamela Johnson; grandchildren, Antionette, Kenny, Michael, Ebony, Chequana, Tyrone, Tameika, Brandon, Jatoya, Alicia and Chaz, great-grandchildren, Tykeesha, Shaquan, Tony and Antoine; sister-in-law, Rose Cohen; son-in-law, Tyrone Morgan Sr. and Pam's fiancé, Ralph Maloney; nephew, Dennis Doggett; and other family members and friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with a service at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Johnson will be cremated by Oxford Hills Crematory in Chester, New York.

Wallace D. Long

Army Air Corps, NYPD

Wallace D. Long, a resident of Inverness, Florida who lived in Broad Channel for 35 years, died March 29. He was 87.

Long was born in Brooklyn. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps and later joined the NYPD. He was a member of American Legion Post #1404 and was an assistant cub master, troop 282.

Long was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Josephine F. Long.

He is survived by his children, Thomas Long, Wallace D. Long and Joanne Young; grandchildren, Michael Long, Wallace Long, Amanda Young, Jennifer Long and David Long.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Hillebrand Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Virgilius Church in Broad Channel. Interment was at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, Long Island.

James C. Regan

Shore Taxi Driver

James C. Regan, a Rockaway resident for 40 years, died March 28.

Regan, a taxi driver for Shore Taxi Service, was born in Albany. He served his country in the U.S. Army after 1955.

Regan was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine.

He is survived by his goddaughter and friend, Maritza Burgos.

Funeral arrangements and visitation were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis de Sales Church. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York.

Loretta Way

Clerk

Loretta Way, a longtime Rockaway resident, died March 31. She was 66.

Way, a clerk, was born in Trenton, North Carolina on March 14, 1941. She was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church and sang in the choir.

Way was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Mrs. Way; brother-in-law, William Edelen; and nephew, William Edelen III.

She is survived by her son, Michael Angel Way; former husband, Angel Way; mother, Emma Johnson; father, Bishop George W. Johnson; sister, Laura Edelen; brother, Vaughn Johnson; aunts, Margaret Greene, Minnie Powell and Roberta Mundine; uncles, Albert, Furney (Gertha), Fred Lee (Marjorie) and Harold (Sylvia); niece, Yvonne King (Paul); nephews, Stephen Edelen (Tracy) and Damon Butler; sister-in-law, Christine Figueroa (Tome); brother-in-law, Domingo (Olga); and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements and visitation were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with a service of remembrance at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Forest Green Park Cemetery in Morganville, New Jersey.
