Local organizations are collecting care package items for U.S. troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan on three more Wednesdays in April and May.

"We are calling on our community members to once again help to support our troops who are fighting for us so far from home," says a joint announcement from the Wounded Warrior Project, St. Francis de Sales Parish Council and the SFDS Sea Breeze Golden Age Club.

The notice was given to The Wave by Flip Mullen, a Belle Harbor resident who is active with the Wounded Warrior Project. The notice, which thanks community members in advance for their support, requests: homemade snacks wrapped in aluminum foil and placed in re-sealable plastic bags; Global calling cards; magazines such as Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and People; tuna salad kits (the kind that includes crackers and a spoon, such as Bumble Bee); silly string (used for detecting booby traps); toiletries such as soap, lip balm, razors and toothpaste in (2-ounce bottles); gum and hard candy; packing supplies; baby wipes or hand wipes.

Care packages will be made up using the goods that are collected and they will be shipped out to a list of local servicemen and women serving overseas.

The items will be collected by the St. Francis de Sales Sea Breeze Golden Age club on the following Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon: April 18, May 2 and May 16. Donations to cover the shipping costs will also be accepted. For more information call Flip Mullen at 718- 945-4593, Danielle Kelly at 718-634-3166 or Maureen McGee at 718-414-1280.
