Three Unions Offering Apprenticeship Programs

Painters, Roofers, Bricklayers Wanted

Several apprentice programs are recruiting applicants, according to State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith.

The Painters and Allied Trades Joint Apprenticeship and Training Fund, District Council 9, will conduct recruitment for 100 painter, decorator and paperhanger apprentices. Applications can be obtained in person only at the council, 45-15 36th Street in Long Island City on Friday, March 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers, Local 8 will conduct recruitment on March 30 for six apprentices. Applications may be obtained in person only at the local, 467 Dean Street in Brooklyn, from 8 a.m. to noon. Completed applications must be returned postmarked no later than April 12.

The Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 1, will conduct recruitment from March 26 through June 29 for 12 bricklayer-mason apprentices and eight pointer-caulker-cleaner apprentices. Applications will be available at the International Masonry Institute, 12-07 44th Avenue in Long Island City on the last Friday of each month during the recruitment period. Applicants must be present by 8 a.m.; no one will be admitted after 8:30 a.m.

The Painters and Allied Trades Joint Apprenticeship requires that applicants:

-Be at least 18 years old

-Have a high school or equivalency diploma

-Be physically able to work

-Attend a three-day orientation

The Roofers apprenticeship requires that applicants:

-Be at least 18 years old

-Have at least a tenth grade education-proof required; a high school diploma or GED is recommended

-Live within the local's jurisdiction-the five boroughs of New York City Westchester, Rockland, Sullivan, Dutchess, Ulster, Orange or Putnam Counties; or Hudson County, New Jersey

-Have a valid driver's license

-Sign a trade specific affidavit attesting to their physical ability to do the work.

The Bricklayers apprenticeship requires that applicants:

-Be at least 18 years old

-Possess sufficient reading and math comprehension skills to satisfactorily complete on-the-job training and related technical instruction. A high school diploma or GED is recommended

-Accepted applicants must complete a 12 week pre-job training course

-Be physically able to do the work
