Gateway Park Infrastructure Continues To Deteriorate

Locals Say Fix Up Park Rather Than Plan For New Paradigm

With the announcement last week that the National Park Conservation Association, a private advocacy group, that a new design competition had been launched for Gateway National Park and especially the Breezy Point Unit, some locals have complained that the park's infrastructure should be brought up to snuff before money is spent on a grand scheme to revamp the entire park is contemplated. Some local residents who regularly visit Fort Tilden for RAA, RTC and RMAC events shot these photos that are representative of the present deterioration at the park. Pictured, graffiti is rampant throughout Fort Tilden and Riis Park and many of the fences are falling down.

Portions of the concrete boardwalk are deteriorated to the point where they are breaking up. Portions of the concrete boardwalk are deteriorated to the point where they are breaking up. Signage is either missing or has fallen to the ground throughout the Riis Park and Fort Tilden venues. Floyd Bennett Field, more isolated and protected, has many of its former aviation assets that are rapidly deteriorating because they get little or no maintenance.
