SFDS CYO Girls Get Bounced Out of Final Four
It was a tough weekend in the Final Four for the SFDS girls. The Novices battled Our Lady of Hope. The girls started well and trailed by only two points at the half, but ran out of gas and fell 23-10.
Meaghan King led with 7 points while Casey McDade and Shannon Twomey anchored the defense. The girls will try to take home the Peggy Boyle title to add to a successful year that has included a runner-up finish at Gate of Heaven in addition to their Diocesan semifinal appearance.
The Rookies will also try for Peggy Boyle gold as they also lost to Our Lady of Hope.
On the Boys side, Jason Perrone hit two free throws with six seconds remaining as the Intermediates edged Monastery 38-35. The Rookies were in a tight contest all the way with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel when a long three point shot went in and sunk St. Francis 42-39. The Bantams were surprised at the outset as Monastery ran out to an 8-0 lead. However two steals by Jack Hurley launched a 16-0 run for St. Francis and they rolled to a 48-23 win. Charlie Marquardt led with 13, Jack Hurley added 8 and Connor Rayder took away the inside game of Monastery with his strong play.
The Novices gained a comfortable lead on St. Margaret and then held off a late charge to win 35-29. The Pee Wee B's cruised past Our Lady of Snows. Anthony Scotto, Brendan Lazo, and Matt Savastano led the scoring, while Thomas Baldrian and Joe Brown keyed the defense.
The season came to a surprising end for the Pee Wee A's as they lost to St. Margaret 31-23. Coaches Tom Morgan and Joe Ryan are proud of what the boys accomplished this year and of all their hard work. They still have the championship game of the Gate of Heaven tournament this week.
The weekend playoff schedule has the Pee Wee B's against Gate of Heaven at 2:30 on Sunday at Our Lady of Lourdes. The Novices face St. Thomas More Sunday at 4:45 at Gate of Heaven.
The Bantams play Saturday at 4:15 against St. Clare at OLBS Bayside. The Intermediates take on St. Gabriel Sunday at 3:30 at St. Kevin. The Pee Wee A's, Novices, and Bantams will also be in action in the Gate of Heaven Tournament.
