Sanders To Address East End Zoning
By Miriam Rosenberg
As construction continues throughout the Rockaway peninsula, rezoning to stop over-development has been an issue that's been front and center for the last few years. Next week Councilman James Sanders Jr. will host a Town Hall "State of the District" Meeting to discuss zoning issues on the East End.
"Zoning is the main issue - the McMansions [and] the tearing down of one family homes," said Donovan Richards, the district manager for Sanders.
Sanders has hired Paul Graziano, of Associated Cultural Resource Consultants, to evaluate possible rezoning options in the district. Graziano is also the consultant hired by Councilman Joseph Addabbo Jr. to make recommendations for rezoning on the West End of Rockaway.
"Paul is ready to report and update the community [about rezoning] on our side of town," continued Richards.
Graziano will be discussing the whole district including the Beach 9 Street area, the bungalows and downtown Far Rockaway. Even areas such as Mott Creek and Bayswater, which were downzoned during the last few years, will be discussed.
"Even though they were downzoned, they are still having problems with developers," Richards said.
The meeting will take place on March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Goldie Maple Academy on Beach 56 Street.
