The Inner Voice

Commentary by Marilyn Gelfand

Change is a constant reality. The issues are just whether they are large or small changes. If one is open and flexible, one can ride the waves of life and adjust to what life gives as opposed to what we want. Often we hope for certain things to happen, but that's not the reality. Hope is our preference of what would make us happy if life would go according to our plan.

Life does bring in big changes that we don't want or expect. In some cases, there are no choices. One must do the right thing or do what one must do. The change can be drastic and how is one to live with all the new ways and loss of the old good things? Sometimes, if we look at our situation from a big picture, there may be an explanation that at least makes sense. If the change is comprehensible, it may help to make it more acceptable. Sometimes, big changes require a breakup of activities into small parts with each section being done one at a time. In another case, one must jump in wholeheartedly. Having our intuitions to guide us will help us get through the fog like radar for a plane. It may take a while, but we will see the way to proceed. Most importantly, we must appreciate what we have every day. If we have someone to help us or a moment's peace it is good to be aware of it. We can still hope, but in the end, life is a reality that becomes easier if we face it rather than keep ourselves frustrated because we didn't get it our way.
