St.Camillus Special Athletes Perform At Hofstra University
On Saturday, January 20, the St. Camillus Special Olympics Basketball Team (also know as the Rockaway Beach Special Athletics) put on an exhibition game at half-time of the varsity basketball game between Hofstra University and William and Mary. An enthusiastic group of supporters from Rockaway as well as the Hofstra students gave a rousing ovation to the Special Olympians.
The St. Camillus Green Team defeated the St. Camillus White Team. The first basket of the game was made by Heather Huber. Baskets were also made by Jeffrey Resnick, Tommy Ryan, Javon Gardner, Colette Rup and Paul Fitzpatrick. The youngest and smallest athlete, Denise Kiernan, dazzled the crowd with her "dribbling skills." Peter Brady, Alexandria O'Byrne, Lauren Atwood and Mike Shapiro coached the two teams.
The Special Olympians and their families traveled to Hofstra in style like NBAand WNBAAll- Stars on Ed Wilmarth's bus. They want to express their gratitude to the Rockaway Peninsula community that so generously supports them and makes these types of experiences possible.
