Broad Channel's Public School 47 Students Perform 'Hansel And Gretel'

Second and third grade students from PS 47 in Broad Channel entertained their schoolmates in Pre-K, Kindergarten and first grade with dance steps they choreographed from the opera "Hansel and Gretel."

All of the grades at the school have been studying opera and attending workshops with the staff of The New York City Opera at Lincoln Center. They also attended an actual performance in Manhattan.

The original presentation by the second and third grades, taken from scenes from "Hansel and Gretel," was the culmination of the year's program, sponsored by the Rockaway Music & Arts Council.

The students were directed by Kathy Ruggiero, teacher of Art/Literacy. Students of Lindsay Lawder, Art Therapist, painted the background scenes.

This program, as well as the Music Memory Program, has been highly successful in local schools. Schools wishing to participate in RMAC's educational programs can call 718-474-6760.
