Addabbo: Pump Sand On The Beaches

City Council Member Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., a member of the City Council Parks and Recreation Committee, strongly urged the Bush Administration to continue its funding for berm strengthening and sand addition to the endangered miles of beaches in Rockaway. Approximately $110 million is at stake to combat erosion and provide multi-year reinforcement of beach walls through sand placement.

Addabbo pointed out at a recent committee hearing that, "if this situation is not addressed soon the serious beach erosion will make beach use by Rockaway residents and its visitors more difficult." The councilman noted that the efforts of the Parks Department must be supplemented by the federal government, more specifically by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Despite having one million cubic yards of sand added to the beach in 2000 and another million cubic yards added in 2004, erosion continues at an accelerated rate. Because of changes in climate, beach erosion is expected to double in the next two decades. The $10 million in federal funds earmarked for the Rockaway beaches has been cut back by the Bush Administration and should be restored according to Addabbo. "I am calling for further federal efforts to protect our coastline and add to our beaches", the councilman stated.

Addabbo also discussed with Queens Park Department Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski, who testified on behalf of the department at the committee hearing, upcoming Rockaway capital projects. "I have allocated $550,000 for the replacement and repair of facia boards along Shore Front Parkway in an effort to enhance the look of the boardwalk and to assist in the efforts of battling beach erosion." Addabbo stated. That capital project should begin in 2007 according to the Parks Department.
