SFDS Girls Victorious In Playoffs

The Girls Diocesan playoffs began this weekend with St. Francis getting off to a fine start. The Intermediates turned in their finest performance of the season, running out to a 17-0 lead en route to a 43-10 win over St. Gabriel. It was a total team effort and the team will next face Our Lady of Lourdes this Sunday at 4PM at OLPH.

The Rookies bounced back into form, winning twice, 32-12 over St. Adalbert, and 37-19 against Mary Nativity. Ashley Raaf and Casey Collins scored 8 points apiece against Mary Nativity, and Deirdre Ray added 5. Raaf poured in 15 in the earlier win over St. Adalbert. The two wins earned them the weekend off. They will resume with quarterfinals on 2/10.

A scheduling problem caused the Bantam game against St. Mary Winfield to be rescheduled to this Saturday, 3:45 at Our Lady of Lourdes. The Novices easily moved past Monastery with a great team effort that was highlighted by beautiful ball handling and exceptional passing. Meghan Atwood and Meaghan King scored 8 each. St. Luke is next, Saturday, 2:30 at Our Lady of Lourdes.

The Pee Wee B's played and exciting game against Corpus Christi. The team played very well but succumbed to their much taller opponents 17-14. Emma Knox and Serena Yanello scored 4 each while trying to contain the Corpus front court giants. Taylor Veigh, Cassie Moriarty, and Kim Sluyk also scored for SFDS. The Pee Wee A's were off and will begin action on 2/10.

The Boys Rookies outgunned St. Helen 46-26 led by Connor Gallagher, Ryan Meade, and Rob Peters. The Bantams scored 17 1st quarter points before putting it in cruise control against Nativity. Jack Hurley scored 6 and Jimmy Wolfer 4 in his return to action. Great to have you back Jim! The Novices beat St. Thomas More 28- 14 before dropping a tough decision to OLPH. St. Francis led 21-20 before going dry in the 4th quarter as OLPH scored the last 8 points to win 28-21.

The Pee Wee A's won a pair. Charles Gavigan, Max Frankel, and Chris Ray staked the team to a 26-10 victory over Nativity. The whole team played well in a win over St. Thomas More, inspired by the coaching duo of Joe and Thomas Ryan. Luke Gersh was explosive on offense while Joe Brown and Augie Ameruso were defensive stalwarts as the Pee Wee B's handled Our Lady of Mercy.

The Subnovice A's appear to have their offense down cold now with two more big outbursts this weekend. John Boyle scored 10, Mark Butigan 6, and Sean Meier and Chris Inga 2 each as they breezed past Our Lady of Grace. Boyle then tossed in 16, Butigan 8 and Ethan Ruiz 5 against OLPH.

The Subnovice B's took on OLG B with an excellent defensive effort. Frankie McVeigh, Christian Apice, Thomas Glynn, and Matt DeCrescenzo scored for SFDS. DeCrescenzo scored 6 points and McVeigh 4 as the offense highlighted against OLG A the following day. Ryan Moran, Brian Ostrander, and Christian Apice completed the scoring.

There will be a limited schedule this weekend at the SFDS gym as the girls continue their playoffs and the boys travel to South Windsor, CT on Saturday. Upcoming highlights include FDNY-NYPD game on Friday 2/23. Girls Diocesan Final Four is 2/24-25. The Peggy Boyle Tournament begins 2/25. Boys Intramurals will start 3/2 or 3/9.
