A 'HEAP' Of Help For Residents
The winter has finally arrived, and Councilman James Sanders Jr. is once again offering the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) to low-income Rockaway residents to help pay monthly electricity, gas and oil bills.
Other benefits of the HEAP program include emergency benefits, such as power shut-off.
To qualify for this program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
-U.S. Citizenship or qualified alien;
-You receive temporary assistance (Safety net or family assistance);
-You receive food stamps;
-You receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI);
-You live in subsidized housing and pay directly for heating costs.
HEAP applicants must call to schedule an appointment, which will be held on Thursdays and Fridays. For more information contact Councilman Sanders' Far Rockaway District Office at 718-471-7014.
Applicants must bring the following documentation:
-A copy or current rent, mortgage receipt or lease;
-One of the following for each person in the household: birth or marriage certificate, school or baptismal record, social security card, or driver's license;
-Proof of total monthly income for each member of the household for the month in which you apply;
-A current fuel and/or utility bill, or a statement from your landlord that heat and utilities are included in your rent.
