      The Far Rockaway High School Class of 1957 is planning a June reunion somewhere on Long Island, perhaps at the Marriott Hotel in Uniondale, nearby the Nassau Coliseum. The organizers are hoping to get graduates from all over the nation to attend the once-in-a-lifetime bash. While the reunion planning is still in infancy, Gail (Bookvar) Jurist seems to be the point woman for the party.

      Overall, the weather has been pretty good for this time of year. Even on some of the coldest days, the sun has beamed down on us, making it seem warmer than it actually is. A lot of kids (and some adults too!) wonder if we will have any accumulation of snow this winter. So far, we have had a dusting here and a flurry there, but not enough to shovel or for kids to play in.

That is, coldness in moods. I hear complaints of irritability, shortness of temper, aggravation, depression, anxiety, insomnia, resentment and bitterness.

      The Hotel Commodore and the Pickwick Arms Apartments had only one thing in common. They both catered to the whims of simmering summer visitors wanting to cool off at the beach and avoid boiling over! The Commodore was a giant hotel on Beach 127 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and the Pickwick was an apartment house near the boards on Beach 117 Street.

      The other morning my wife tapped me to drive her to an early appointment. It was in Lynbrook she said, not far, and I said sure, of course, anything for you dear. She said she had to be there by 8:30 a.m. Not a problem I thought. What does it take to drive through Rockaway? I could do it in 20 - 25 minutes without breaking a sweat.
