Bright Smiles 'Cause Streetlights Are Back On
City Councilman Joseph Addabbo Jr. and Rockaway Beach resident Patty McCabe are all smiles Monday night as they stand under the streetlights on the corner of Beach 81 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, a spot that until recently was dark at night due to a construction mishap 13 months ago. Streetlights in the area were knocked out in December 2005, when cables were cut by workers installing new traffic signals on the boulevard. Despite facing a serious health issue, McCabe, a 16-year resident of the area, was determined to see the streetlights restored for safety's sake. (The sound of gunfire, she said, is prevalent in the area.) She contacted Addabbo last summer, after getting the runaround from 311, other elected officials and city agencies. "Joe called the Mayor's Office directly," said an emotional McCabe, who contacted The Wave last week to praise the councilman and the staff in his Rockaway office. "I'm just very grateful," she said. "I have not been this happy in a very long time." Addabbo said McCabe shouldn't have had to fight so hard for something as basic as streetlights and that he was happy to help.
