Locals Power Fontbonne Hall Swimming To Victory
Action resumed this weekend in the GCHSAA swim league, as the Fontbonne Varsity Bonnies took on the swimmers from Saint Joseph by the Sea, from Staten Island. The Bonnie Swimmers came out strong and were able to defeat St. Joseph Sea by a score of 92 -78.
The Bonnie effort was led off by the 200 medley relay of Michelle Powers, Elaina Anastasio, Alexa Morrisey, and Patricia Scherpf, (2:07.8); Powers also won the 50 freestyle, (28.09) while Scherpf took the 100 freestyle (1:08.3); and Anastasio led all swimmers in the 100 breaststroke, (1:21.2).
Despite only four first place finishes in eleven events the Bonnies were able to prevail by piling up points with their depth. The many seconds, thirds and fourths provided the margin of victory.
Among those contributing were Melissa DeMarco, (2nd, 200 free @2:35); Alexa Morrisey, (2nd, 200IM @ 2:41.9); Jacklyn Izzo, (3rd, 50 free @31.06); Justine Macready, (2nd 100fly @1:18.1); Samantha Motley, (3rd 100 fly @1:22.4); Kristin McMaster, (2nd, 100 free @1:10); DeMarco, (3rd, 500 free @7:18.4); Lauren O'Hara, (4th, 200IM @ 3:05.5); Katie Losquadro, (4th 100 fly @1:22.8); Alexis Liscandrella, (4th 100 free @ 1:11.8), Jane Taikina, (4th, 500 free @ 7:23.1); Megan Morris, (4th, 100 back @ 1:20.6); Olivia O'Hara, (4th, 100 breast @ 1:31.7); and a 3rd place finish in the 400free relay by McMaster, Virginia Maloney, Catherine Muldoon, and Jackie Izzo, (4:58.1).
Prior to the meet, the coaches reported to the team of a favorable turn of events from the meet results from mid-December. The Bonnies suffered a heart wrenching loss 86-84 to the Saint Joseph Hill squad, revealed that two St Joe swimmers were entered in three individual events, (rules allow each swimmer to compete in only two individual events).
As a result those two swimmers were each DQ'd from their third event and the scores were re-calculated, resulting in a 90-80 win for Fontbonne. This leaves the Fontbonne Varsity with a dual meet record of 5 wins 2 losses.
