Broad Channel Slugs It Out In Championship Defeat
Up until the start of the third period of the Aviator Hockey amateur league Class B championship, the Broad Channel hockey team was playing on all cylinders.
Then the third period began and their opponent, Aviator Sports went wild, scoring three goals and increasing their lead to 6-3. But the fireworks weren't done there, not by a long shot as an ice brawl broke between the two combatants and ended the contest.
The hullabaloo began with 9:37 left in the third period. Broad Channel's Mike Christopher tripped on his own skates and slid to the Aviator goalkeeper. Not knowing it was an accidental trip, the Aviator goalkeeper and a teammate slugged Christopher while laying on the ice which ignited an all out brawl.
Five minutes later, the scene on the ice was still a bit chaotic. With the combatants still scuffling and the crowd chanting and banging on the glass, Aviator security and referees put a halt to a game.
Broad Channel goalkeeper Brian Williams, who was in the slugfest with teammate brother Pat, said it was unfortunate way to end the game. They had a lot of fun he says in their first year playing at Aviator Sports after his team previously played in the Long Island Hockey League in Syosset.
"One of their guys starting hitting Mike and it just took off. We scored, they scored, they came back to tie the game and they just had the momentum in the third period," Brian Williams said.
"It's a disappointing way to the end the season. What are you going to do? In our last league, we only made it to the first round of the playoffs. Here we made it to the championship so we look forward to playing next season which starts on January 2."
Sharif Solaman Chavanne scored two goals and Bobby Glade added the third for Broad Channel, who finished with 8-3 in 11 regular season games.
