Wet & Cold Before Hitting The Waves

The discomfort of these young Belle Harbor ladies, even before hitting the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean on New Year's Day, is evident in their faces. With a driving rain and temperatures in the 40's, the group who made the annual plunge at Beach 146 Street this year was smaller than in the past few years, but no less energetic. When they finally did hit the water, they found the environment even more freezing and few stayed in the ocean for more than a few seconds. For more photographs of the Beach 146 Street event, see page 38. Photos from other ocean dips on New Year's Day are featured throughout the paper. Photo by Howard Schwach
