Broad Channel Brothers Busted Lifting Liquor

By Howard Schwach

Two brothers from Broad Channel were arrested last week for breaking into the local Veterans of Foreign Wars hall to steal its liquor supply, authorities said.

Anthony Dunne, 20 and his brother, Christopher Dunne, 16, were spotted at the Broad Channel Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall at 710 Shad Creek Road at 7:20 a.m. on December 2. The younger brother, police say, was seen inside the hall, passing bottles of liquor and a digital camera to his older brother, who was standing by the open window.

Police arrested Christopher at the hall, but his older brother bolted for nearby Jamaica Bay and fled into the marsh grass, dropping the bottles of liquor and the camera as he ran, according to court records.

Police called in helicopters from the NYPD Aviation Unit and divers were brought to the scene to search for the alleged booze burglar.

Anthony was captured about 15 minutes later when the downwind from the police chopper's blades fanned out the tall marsh grass and revealed the Broad Channel man, who was clad in black.

The two, who live at 32 West 10 Road in Broad Channel, were arraigned on charges of burglary, possession of burglar's tools, criminal mischief, petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

In addition, the older brother, Anthony, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Christopher was charged with resisting arrest, the DA's spokesperson said, because he flailed his arms and refused to be handcuffed.

The next court date for the brothers is set for December 19.
