Locals Win Design Awards From Queens Chamber
Addabbo Health Center,Wharton's Apothecary Take Top Honors
By Howard Schwach
Two newly completed buildings in Arverne and Broad Channel won top honors at the Queens Chamber of Commerce 2006 Annual Building Awards. The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center at 6200 Beach Channel Drive won the award in the category of New Construction, Health Related Facilities and Wharton's Apothecary in Broad Channel grabbed the top prize in two categories, New Construction, Commercial and New Construction, Interiors. The Queens Chamber of Commerce has been encouraging the design and construction of more attractive buildings in the borough through its Building Awards competition since 1926 and many structures throughout the borough sport a bronze plaque from the Chamber recognizing the buildings contribution to the Queens landscape. Awards are given in a variety of categories for both new construction and for exterior rehabilitations, alterations or additions. Award presentations took place at the Chambers 94th Annual Dinner at Russo's on The Bay last Thursday, November 30th.
The New Addabbo facility, at 6200 Beach Channel Drive, is a state-of-the-art federal health center, the only one of its kind on the Rockaway Peninsula. The building was designed by Gertler Wente Kerbeykian Architects and built by Humphreys & Harding, Inc.
The second award won by Wharton's Apothecary was in the category of New Construction, Commercial. The building is owned by Charles Howard of Broad Channel. It's design team was from Louis R. Colalillo, AIA. It was built by Howard.
Wharton's Apothecary in Broad Channel won two awards in the annual competition. The first was in the category of New Construction, Interiors. The new drug store, which is set to open shortly, has a unique, turnof the-century feel.
