Crowds Flock To 'Little North Pole'Lighting Ceremony
More than 1,000 local residents crowded onto Neponsit Avenue between Beach 144 and Beach 145 Streets for what has become one of the holiday season's most anticipated events, the lighting of "The Little North Pole" at the home of Joseph and Maritza Mure. The relatively balmy weather this year brought out larger crowds than usual to watch Mure and Tony Sirico, Paulie Walnuts on "The Sopranos" television show, throw the switch that turned on thousands of lights and mechanical attractions at the Neponsit home. Also on hand were the County Tyrone Pipe Band, St. Edmunds band and, of course, Santa Claus, who brought toys for all the boys and girls. For adults, there was a wide range of free food, hot chocolate and eggnog.
