Stranded Oil Barge In Near-Miss With Rockaway Rocks

A tugboat towing an oil barge from East Rockaway to the Port of New York lost power on Thursday and had to drop its towline in the East Rockaway Inlet, off the Rockaway beachfront. The Tugboat Jenny Anne eventually regained power, but the barge, Elko Princess drifted west toward Beach 44 Street and the rock jetty that juts out into the ocean. With the barge barely seven feet from the rocks, however, another tug called by the barge's owner managed to take charge and tow it back to East Rockaway. There was no oil spill as a result of the near grounding incident.
