Deal Slammed For Rockaway Scammer

A Bronx judge has postponed sentencing for Rockaway resident Charles Rosen, who pled guilty in October to felony charges of grand larceny and forgery in connection with tens of thousands of dollars looted from the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Clubs, including about $20,000 that was used to furnish and refurbish his Rockaway oceanfront condominium.

Rosen, whose Rockaway apartment is at 133 Beach 120 Street, pled guilty as part of a plea deal that would have fined him $5,000 and forced him to make restitution of $38,575, a fraction of the more than $1.2 million the city says he and others stole from the charity.

This week, however, a number of Gloria Wise's relatives pled with the court to insure that Rosen spends some time in jail. "My sister's name has been dragged through the mud," Juanita Garrido, whose sister, Gloria Wise, died in 1993 and was the founder of the club that served kids and the elderly at Co-op City. "[Rosen] took her legacy."

About 500 letters and petitions with more than 1,000 signatures were turned over to the judge, Bronx Supreme Court Judge John Byrne, calling for him to reconsider the plea deal that called for a fine and partial restitution.

The petitions call for Rosen to serve anywhere between three and seven years in jail. The city had charged that Rosen used more than $20 thousand of the money he stole to fix up his Rockaway apartment.

No new sentencing date has yet been set.
