MLS Soccer Stars Highlight Action Expo At Beach Channel

The Action Center for Education and Community Development will bring local and international soccer stars to Beach Channel High School on Sunday, August 20 starting at 12 p.m.

Edson Buddle, the 25 year old forward from the Major League Soccer New York Bulls and former Chivas USA goalkeeper Martin Zuniga will take part in the festivities for the Action Center Youth 2006 Expo.

Two hundred children between the ages of 6 and 14 will be selected to get soccer lessons from coaches and the star players.

The New York Red Bulls forward is a five year veteran of the league who has scored 36 goals in 102 games played in his career. The 6 foot 1 star was born in New Rochelle.

Zuniga was an important goalkeeper and sparkplug for the famous Mexican soccer team, Chivas, and helped them win the Mexican First Division championship in 1997.

The Expo will be a part of what the Action Center is proclaiming the biggest Queens youth event this summer. When the doors open at 12 pm, the community is invited to take place of other activities that will take place during the day. In addition to the soccer clinic, there will be a carnival, an Action Center Mall for parents to shop in and a Queens Youth talent show.

Aconcert by Def Soul recording artist 112 will be one of the highlights of the day as $20 are available to the public, though it is limited.

The concert is by invitation only for 1,000 students enrolled in Action Center tutoring or afterschool programs or high school students who have shown academic improvement in the past year.

Limited tickets are on sale for the concert at the Action Center, which is located on 1612 Central Avenue in Far Rockaway on August 10, 13 to the 18 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more questions, call the center at 718-337-5040.

Anominal fee will be required to take part of the carnival rides, games, raffles, food that will be on hand.

The Action Center is a non-profit corporation, and year round program which aims to help the youth and families who are at risk in the community. The organization provides free tutoring among other lessons and instruction in piano, ballet, music and other youth activities for the Rockaway community.

They also provide GED, ESL and computer lessons among their other functions.

The intention for the money raised at the end of the day will be to continue to support funds to provide support to the community and expand after-school activities as track and field, soccer, health and fitness and swimming teams.

Washington Mutual and Adidas are some of the sponsors who are participating with the Action center to hold the event.
