Man On Bike Shot In Pelvis
By Brian Magoolaghan

Police used crime scene tape to seal off the area around a van that was stuck by gunfire Monday night and then searched for ballistic evidence.

A 28-year-old Far Rockaway man was shot in his pelvis Monday night as he rode his bike past the Ocean Bay Houses on Beach Channel Drive, police said.

Charles Pannell, 28, suffered a single gunshot wound to his left side as he rode past 410 Beach 54 Street at about 8:30 p.m., police said. Cops responded to the scene and later caught up with Pannell at the emergency room at Peninsula Hospital Center.

Pannell told police he was riding his bike back from the store when he heard a gunshot and then felt a sharp pain in his hip. He said he didn't see who shot him or where the bullet came from, and police later described him as uncooperative.

Two automobiles parked near the scene of the shooting were struck with bullets. One of them, a white Chevy Astro van had its driver side window blown out.

The incident sparked a major response by police, who searched the area for suspects and interviewed witnesses. No arrest was made and police were still investigating at press time.
