Brutal Stabbing Brings Big Bust
The 100 Precinct responded to a call of a man stabbed at 214 Beach 96 Street at about 7:45 p.m. on August 4. Officers found George Rodriguez, 32, with several stab wounds, including two 12-inch lacerations to his neck. Rodriguez was rushed to Peninsula Hospital Center, where it took 40 stitches to close his wounds. He was listed in stable condition.
Shortly after making that find, police arrested the alleged attacker, Luis Alvarez, 36, of Southern Boulevard in the Bronx. Alvarez was convicted of attempted robbery in 1995, according to court records. Officers quickly obtained a search warrant and entered Rodriguez's apartment on Saturday, August 5. They found two guns, five pounds of marijuana, three pounds of uncut cocaine, $3,000 in cash, a shotgun, a rifle and a device used for growing marijuana, according to court records. Police sources estimate the street value of the haul was in excess of $100,000. Alvarez was indicted on charges of attempted murder, assault and felony criminal possession of a weapon. His bail was set at $200,000 and he was still being held at press time, according to a spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown. Rodriquez was arraigned on several charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of marijuana and criminal possession of a weapon. He was remanded without bail. His next court date is August 21.
