for larger version       BCHS, FRHS Prepare For Soccer, Baseball Playoffs With the PSAL baseball playoffs starting this week, Beach Channel's journey to the title game at Shea Stadium on June 9 will be full of major tests. The Dolphins clinched the Queens South B title with a 14-2 record which gained them the #9 seed and a first round matchup at home against #24 Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy of the Bronx. Riverdale finished 8-4 in the regular season. One of the more competitive divisions, Queens South B placed four teams in the playoffs. Along with the Dolphins, Van Buren, Jamaica and Hillcrest qualified in a competitive division but it did not give Beach Channel any favors in the seedings. Of the eight division champions in the city, the Dolphins got one of the lower seeds with only Banneker, the Brooklyn North B Champion, wounding up with a #13 seed. "I can't judge if it's a right ranking or not. I don't know the other division but I know our division was strong," Dolphins head coach Tom Kazlaski said. Adlai Stevenson, the Bronx North B champions, received a #1 seed. Last year's PSAL B champions Frederick Douglass Academy, the current Manhattan North B Champions, was ranked third. Thomas Edison, the Queens North B Champion at 14-2, also competed with four playoff bound divisional opponents but did not seem to get any props from the PSAL seeding committee. They were only ranked one higher place than Beach Channel at #8. Beach Channel's ability to pound the ball on offense has been key to their success and has averaged 10 runs a ballgame. Their pitching has been solid but will have to find a consistency, just like the rest of his team must do in this single elimination tournament according to Kazalski. "It doesn't make any difference who we play. It's a whole new ballgame here. It's and one and done we'll fight for the glory." The peninsula schools also qualified for the PSAL soccer girls' playoffs which start on May 30 as post-season matches will be setup at presstime, It is yet to be determined if Beach Channel, who finished second in the Queens B III division to John Adams at 6-4-2 and 20 points, and Far Rockaway, who ended in third place at 5-3-4 and 19 points, will be hosting a first round game or end up on the road. The Roberts sisters will be kicking the ball in the postseason as well. Courtney Roberts is the fourth leading goal scorer in the PSAL with 25 for Frank Sinatra High School of The Arts. The senior's younger sister Celeste, netted 11 goals for Midwood, the PSAL Brooklyn A division champions.
