Junior Olympic Competition Heads To Beach Channel

The Rockaway Sports Association in conjunction with the United States Olympic Committee and Kellogg's will hold the USA Junior Olympic Skills Competition at Beach Channel High School on Saturday, May 20 at 1 p.m.

The program is administered to boys and girls who have the chance to showcase their skills in four different sports. Basketball, Tennis, Soccer and Track and Field are the four sports which will be featured. Registration, which will be done at BCHS on the day of the competition, is free and available to boys and girls ages 8-13. Prizes for age and gender group champions include ribbons and medals. Winners will get the chance to advance to the regionals and the opportunity to reach the finals, which will be held at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Potential contestants should arrive and register for an individual sport 30 minutes before the start of the event. For more information, email at xzz411@aol.com

Basketball: Score as many points as possible by making baskets from designated shooting areas and the free throw line.

Soccer: Dribble, shoot, and score in the fastest time possible.

USTA Rapid Rally Tennis: Serve and continue to hit a low-compression tennis ball against the wall as many times as possible.

Track & Field: The Sprint - Complete a 50-meter sprint in the fastest time possible. The Jump - Jump as far as possible from a standing start. The Ultimate Shot Put - Shot put a softball for distance.
