Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Opens Doors For 2006 Season
By Joe McGivney

Wednesday night 5/24 will mark the beginning of the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League's 16th season. The addition of seven new teams this year brings the grand total of squads to 46, comprised of about 600 players. The new rosters are filled with long-time Rockaway neighbors and friends and we are thrilled to welcome them to the RBVL family. Say hello to The Mighty Boosh, United Restoration, Boarders, Papa's Pizza, McMahon's Irish Pub, Team Margarita and Simon Says Sea Bar. We also welcome some new sponsors like Sullivan and Galleshaw and the Bayview.

This expansion comes with a small dose of fear and trepidation. It means we need more equipment, referees and beach space, all of which are tough to come by. We will need to ask for more help from you to make this all work smoothly. With a few more bodies lending a hand each week, we should be OK. The benefits of adding many of our local comrades to the fold should make it well worth the effort.

This Wednesday night is actually a practice night at the beach and the games will not count toward the final standings. Come out and shake off the cobwebs, stretch your groin muscles and practice your 12 oz. curls. New teams (and anyone else who needs a refresher course) will be shown how to set up the net systems that we use.

Dress warm and pray for "No Rain!" (Hopefully it won't pour for the fourth straight year). After we finish playing ball we will head over to the Blarney Castle in Breezy Point for the first party of the season. Rain or shine, the party is on! Additionally, uniforms and schedules will be given out at the bar at that time. If you have any outstanding administrative items to take care of, do so at the Blarney.

Once again we will have 6 divisions with varying levels of skill. The 2006 divisional breakdown is listed below. Wednesday, 5/31 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until 8/12. Next week the full bar schedule for the season will be published in our weekly Wave article.

Clear some time and drop in on all your favorite Rockaway haunts. Also, don't forget to check our website at www.rbvl.com. While you're waiting for the 2006 action to begin you can look back at photos and stories from the past few seasons.

It will only be 5 days before we meet on the beach. If you have any questions before then please call Patty Moule at 917-566-2809 (Call between 10 AM and 9 PM.).

Let the games begin! See you on the beach on 5/24.
