The boater, identified as Michael Bianco, 44, of Strobe Avenue in Staten Island, fell overboard at about 8:20 p.m. as his 26-foot Mako fishing boat was anchored near the bridge, police said. Eyewitnesses who saw the event from the beach at Floyd Bennett Field said they heard the man screaming for help and saw him flailing his arms, adding that they last saw him about 100 feet south of his vessel. They called 911 and NYPD Harbor and Aviation units quickly began a search for the man that lasted until the early hours of Thursday morning. The boat was recovered at the bridge and towed to the former Coast Guard Station across from Fort Tilden.
At daybreak on Thursday morning, police divers went back into Jamaica Bay looking for Bianco's body. In addition, a police launch and a helicopter worked the area nearby the southern end of the bridge. Bianco was alone in the boat when he went over the side, police said.
