The program, funded by Rockaway Music and Arts (RMAC) for PS 114, introduces children to a variety of music and creates a lifelong appreciation for all kinds of music. Over the course of the school year, teachers introduced 16 different pieces of music, mostly classical, jazz, opera and choral music. A visual "music map" accompanies each piece of music, and the children learned several music terms. Lessons for each music selection incorporated other curriculum areas, including history, math and literacy. For the Music Memory Competition this year, a group of third graders represented PS 114. As the Riverside Symphony plays an excerpt of the piece, the students identified the title of the selection and the composer. The children were further challenged when the pieces of music are changed slightly, either through the use of different instruments, different tempos, etc. They placed fourth in the Music Memory Competition.
