NYPD Readies For Summer On Beach 74 Street
Despite the rain and temperatures being in the mid-fifties, the special emergency services unit (ESU) launched a training exercise and took to the waters this past Tuesday morning. Arriving at Beach 74 Street at about 10:00 a.m., onlookers watched as officers suited up for the cold waters. By 11:15 a.m. the unit had its Jet Ski in the water and was going through rescue procedures. The officers were reviewing how to take hold of someone while on the Jet Ski, securing an injured person on the flotation device towed behind the Jet Ski and launch procedures to get the emergency equipment in the waters. Facing rough currents and high waves brought on by the weather, the officers spent several rounds in the surf, and the Jet Ski was eventually overturned by the waves. However, the recovery time was remarkably fast and they were back at their routine once again.
