The Inner Voice

by Marilyn Gelfand

When we are in tough moments, it can be difficult to separate ourselves from the emotions we are feeling. Expressions like "This too shall pass" or "A year from now, I probably won't even remember how I am feeling," etc. remind us that everything does change. It is important to remember that time will go by, and this will bring about something else or the situation will come to an end. An emotion is good to feel to know what I am going through, but then if possible, it is good to reach a state of equilibrium.

If you find yourself in a broken record mindset or a constant fear, for example, break the energy by saying STOP to yourself. Take deep, deep breaths and try to do something to make yourself feel better, like taking a bath or listening to good music. Then put your life in God's hands, and trust that divine order will manifest in your life. We have to trust that our instincts will guide us to our next step. Even though the feeling may still be there, acknowledge it, and tell yourself that you needn't be afraid of the emotion. It won't kill you to feel it.

You can live with it as long as it takes till you don't feel it any longer. So if your mind constantly returns to fear so be it. You can do everything you need to with fear as your partner. Eventually, the situation will end.

When we try to think back to how we felt emotionally or physically at a particular time in our lives, we can realize how hard it is to feel pain when the pain is no longer there. We can recall it in our thoughts, but the emotional experience is less intense as a memory. We can remind ourselves that this will happen in the future as it has done in the past when I try to recall this very moment. This feeling will be gone and I won't even be able to remember it.
