FF Find 'Heavy Body Of Fire' On B. 14 St.

More than 60 firefighters responded to a "heavy body of fire" roaring through a vacant home at 229 Beach 14 Street in Far Rockaway on Saturday afternoon. Fire officials say that the first call came in at 3:45 p.m. and 12 fire units with more than 60 firefighters responded. The fire was declared "under control" at 4:23 p.m. FDNY Chief Clark told A Wave reporter at the scene that there had been no determination as to whether the fire was of suspicious origin, but onlookers said that the vacant home was used by some locals who were seen running away right before the first smoke and fire was observed. While no civilians were injured, one unidentified fire fighter was taken to St. John's Episcopal Hospital with minor burns. Photograph by Miriam Rosenberg
