The Inner Voice by Marilyn Gelfand

Spring is in the air.

What a wonderful feeling to watch nature in action. The trees are blooming, and animals are beginning to mate and nest. The cycle of life continues. Human beings can take a sense of security in the continuing natural patterns of existence. We as humans have been given free will and it seems hard to believe how against the natural patterns humans have come. Besides feeling superior to other aspects of our environment, humans kill each other when it's not about a food supply issue. But, we can feel safe knowing that we are part of a larger big picture that has order and patterns, which explains how things are.

My kids pulled out some old photo albums over the holidays, and I realize how much I have changed. When I look at myself, I see how pretty I really was, especially from my current perspective. At the time, I didn't think I was pretty at all. But, compared to this me, I see the difference. I have heard this from my friends too. In the present moment, we end up comparing ourselves to others in the same situation. But, with the perspective of time and hindsight, you can see life differently. Personally, I feel so much smarter now that I wouldn't trade places with my young self for an instant. All of the growing I did brought knowledge through life experiences. My older age wisdom is priceless. We need to be healthy and attractive during the mating period, but later on what we really need is wisdom. As people age and begin to face their own mortality, new lessons are given to us in our natural patterns.

Nature is even predictable in that it has moments of spontaneous unpredictability where things are washed away, and a clean start is given often with nourishment. Storms, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc. provide fresh starts. Like our own deaths, all in nature dies as well.

It is comforting to know that we are natural beings just moving along our own growth pattern with lots of opportunities along the way. It is up to us to make the most of these precious times.
