Infant Dies Despite Police Efforts

An infant died at a local hospital this week despite efforts of police, who gave the unconscious boy CPR and raced him to a local hospital in their patrol car.

Police responded to 120 Beach 19 Street at about 5 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a 911 call reporting an unconscious child, according to department sources. Upon their arrival, the father of the boy 3-month-old told officers that his son was not breathing.

Two officers gave the boy CPR and rushed him to St. John's Episcopal Hospital in their patrol car, but the he was pronounced dead later that night.

Police said there were "no signs of criminality at this time," but a crime scene was established at the apartment where the boy lived and the Medical Examiner's Office was called in, police said.

The Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy, the outcome of which was still pending at press time.

Police are withholding the name of the infant and his father.
