Smith Probed In 'Scalding Coffee' Throw
By Howard Schwach

State Senator Ada Smith, is literally in hot water for the second time in two years as a criminal investigation has been launched into an aide's allegation that the Senator, who represents Broad Channel, threw a cup of scalding hot coffee at her, officials say.

The allegations include one that Smith pulled the aide's hair after she threw the coffee.

The Daily news dubbed Smith as the "Wild Woman of Albany" after a series of run-ins with police and staffers.

The coffee was tossed at the aide, identified as Jennifer Jackson, allegedly because the aide said that she was surprised that Smith did not slim down more on her diet program, published reports said.

Smith denied the allegations.

"Nothing like that ever happened," she told Albany reporters.

"The claims have been made by a disgruntled former employee and are completely and utterly false."

Smith has been in hot water with law enforcement officials prior to this incident. In 1996, Smith was accused of menacing an aide with a meat cleaver.

In 1998, NYPD officers subdued Smith with mace after she allegedly hit a police officer following a traffic accident in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn.

In 2003, she was cited for gunning her car through a security checkpoint at an Albany parking garage, nearly mowing down the state trooper who asked for her identification. Years prior to her election as a State Senator, Smith was a deputy city clerk. She was once accused of assaulting a witness at a wedding she was conducting by hitting her with a garbage can cover.
