PHC Auxiliary Discusses Diabetes
Peninsula Hospital Center's Auxiliary sponsored a well-attended luncheon and meeting earlier this week and hosted Perry Herson, M.D., as its guest speaker. The topic of Dr. Herson's discussion was: "Diabetes - The New Epidemic." He explained that there are more than six million people in the United States living with diabetes who aren't even aware that they have the disease, a disease which increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, blindness, as well as kidney and vascular problems. More and more adolescents are being diagnosed with diabetes, partly because of very poor diets and obesity. Dr. Herson stressed the need for nutrition and exercise in order to prevent diabetes, and emphasized that diabetes can be managed. He said that the earlier the diagnosis of the disease and treatment, the better the patient's outlook is for preventing many complications and protecting their health. Peninsula Hospital Center has an active Diabetes Support Group that meets the second Monday of each month at 10 am in the Meditation Room at the Peninsula Hospital Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation, located directly adjacent to the main hospital building.
