Addabbo Hosts ‘Rockaway Lite’n Up’Program To Make Rockaway Thinner
yearlong weight loss program entitled “Lite’n Up Rockaways.” The kick-off event began with a weigh-in and registration on Friday, February 10, at the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center, 67-10 Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Arverne. Lite’n Up Rockaways, organized by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center and Healthfirst, aims to help residents shed pounds and develop a better lifestyle through healthy eating and exercise. Also participating in the program are Weight Watchers and the Cornell Cooperative Extension, which will provide nutrition and cooking counseling. “When the New York City Department of Health classified the Rockaways as one of the heaviest communities in New York, we realized we were a community at risk and needed to work together to overcome this health crisis,” says J.R. Peter Nelson, Ph.D., Executive Director at the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center. “Lite’n Up Rockaways is aimed at helping overweight adults and children. Obesity is often associated with health problems like diabetes and heart disease. Obese children face potential health risks for their entire lives. We want to make changes now to improve the health and well-being of our residents,” says Dr. Nelson.
