SFDS Novice, Bantam Girls Grab CYO Playoff Wins

The Novice and Bantam girls advanced to the Diocesan quarterfinals with victories this past weekend. Taylor Butigan and Erin Blum combined for their usual inside/outside scoring, while Regina Paskoff, Lynn Rayder, and Athena McDonald-Smith complemented the duo with their defense and rebounding as the Novices beat St. Matthias 23-14.

The girls take on Corpus Christi at 4 p.m. on Saturday at St. Margaret. The Bantams cruised past St. Robert’s 35-21 as Ashley Raaf scored 12 and Casey Collins 11. St. Thomas Apostle is next on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at Corpus Christi. The other girls’ teams did not fare so well. The Intermediates fell victim to their lack of manpower and an outstanding performance by an opposing player.

After Molly McNulty tied the score at 38, Jessica Iori fouled out. St. Andrew’s hit a 3 pointer to retake the lead. McNulty then fouled out with two minutes remaining and St. Francis had to play with only 4 girls. The mismatch was too much to overcome and St. Andrew’s closed out the win 45-41. Molly McNulty led with 16, Kathryn Edwards added 10, and Allison Dunn and Caroline Clark 7 each.

The Rookies lost to last year’s champs, Our Lady of Lourdes, 40-34. Offensive highlights were provided by Danielle Farragher, Annete Scotto, Kathryn Foris, Rebecca Moers, and Kristin Ferrandino. Vanessa Ramos, Christina Cordes, Alison McGovern, and Kim Newman anchored the defense. Taylor Conroy cheered on her teammates from the bench as she was unable to play due to injury.

The PeeWee B’s ran into a buzzsaw against Our Lady of Hope and suffered their first loss of the season. All the teams hope to redeem themselves in the upcoming Peggy Boyle Tournament at SFDS, later this month.

The Boys PeeWee B’s won a pair including a thriller at Gate of Heaven on Sunday. Down 16-10 with 2:30 remaining, St. Francis scored the last 7 points including the winning basket with 10 seconds remaining on a beautiful pass from Ryan Schonfeld to Michael Buckley. The boys took a 21-12 decision against Nativity on Saturday. The Novices remained undefeated with wins over St. Thomas Apostle and Holy Child.

The Bantams beat Nativity and OLPH, but lost once again to St. Thomas More.

The Rookies won twice to extend their season high winning streak to three games. Xander McDonald-Smith’s buzzer beater in overtime gave St. Francis a thrilling 23-21 win over Nativity after a tough defensive struggle throughout the game.

The shot recalled Andrew Schultz’ winning shot in the Diocesan Championship two years ago. On Sunday, Schultz refreshed some more memories, going on a scoring rampage with 14 of his 18 points coming in a 5 minute stretch of the first half as St. Francis beat Holy Child.

St. Francis will play host to teams from South Windsor and Southington, Connecticut this Saturday. Schedule is as follows: 11:00 Rookie, 12:30 Intermediate, 2:00 Bantam, 3:30 Novice.
