Weiner: Screen Copter Passengers

Representative Anthony Weiner, a member of the Transportation Committee and the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, today called on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to screen all helicopter passengers. He renewed his call first made in 2004 following reports that the TSA will begin screening helicopter passengers traveling from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport to JFK Airport.

“Since 9/11 the government has done too little to protect cities like New York from the threat of helicopter attacks, despite reports that terrorists have cased helicopters as instruments of destruction.

“I am pleased that the TSA is finally taking action to screen helicopter passengers in New York City - something I first proposed 18 months ago. But they must check tour groups too. All helicopter passengers, not just those traveling to JFK, should be required to go through security screening.  We have to treat helicopters just like passenger jets.”

In 2004, Weiner introduced legislation that would require the Department of Homeland Security to close dangerous loopholes that allow passengers boarding helicopters to skirt TSA screening.
