for larger version       Senator Urges NYC Youth To Become Lifeguards State Senator Malcolm A. Smith is urging New York City youth to enroll in the New York City Parks and Recreation lifeguard recruitment program, which has begun for the 2006 summer season. “Working as a lifeguard is a wonderful opportunity for young people who are interested in public safety. Having well-trained lifeguards is vital for New York’s Parks and Recreation. There’s no question that with 52 outdoor pools and 14 miles of beaches, lifeguards are a valuable component of the summer season,” said Senator Smith. The Parks department is looking for mature and dependable candidates for this free training course. All eligible candidates must be 16 years of age or older, have eyesight no worse than 20/30 in one eye and 20/40 in the other, and be able to swim 50 yards in 35 seconds. “This type of training course is especially beneficial to teens because it is a chance to learn discipline while simultaneously learning a valuable skill. Lifeguarding can be both challenging and demanding, but it is also rewarding and important for community safety.
