St.Francis Hosts Championship Tournament On Saturday

The 22nd edition of the St. Francis de Sales Christmas Tournament is heading toward its conclusion this Saturday, December 30.

The first week has been full of exciting games, and Tournament directors Marty and Keith Andresen are expecting a dazzling finish.

In the Subnovice division, St. Francis Gold has defeated St. Thomas More and Corpus Christi to advance to the final of the winner’s bracket. They will face St. Francis Blue who beat Nativity earlier. The loser will play Corpus Christi for the opportunity to play the winner in Saturday’s championship game at 11:00 a.m.

In the Pee Wee division, St. Francis Blue will play St. Andrew in the winner’s bracket final. The Blue squad advanced with wins over Nativity and Blessed Sacrament. St. Francis Gold is still alive, taking the hard way.

After a first round loss to St. Andrew, they have beaten St. Adalbert, Gate of Heaven, and Blessed Sacrament in succession. They will face the loser of SFDS Blue-St. Andrew’s for the other berth in the championship at 12:15 on Saturday.

The St. Francis Novices won three, beating Epiphany, St. Christopher, and St. Stans. They will have a rematch with St. Stans in Saturday’s championship at 1:30.

The Bantam division produced the highlight game of the tournament so far. With the score tied at 41 and 18 seconds remaining, Jack Hurley hit four straight free throws as St. Francis took the latest installment in their long running rivalry with St. Helen. Earlier, St. Francis opened with a win over St. Thomas More. St. Thomas and St. Helen now face off, looking for a rematch with St. Francis on Saturday at 3:15.

The Rookies of St. Francis have also taken the long road, following an opening loss to St. Joseph-St. Thomas. Wins over Epiphany, St. Virgilius, and St. Margaret have moved them into the loser’s bracket final. St. Thomas More will get a shot at St. Joseph-St. Thomas first. The winner moves on to the championship on Saturday at 4:30. The loser must face St. Francis for the other spot in the final.

The St. Francis Intermediates began with a win over Nativity before losing to Good Shepherd. They now face a daunting task with a tough matchup against Our Lady of Grace, in hope of a rematch with Good Shepherd on Saturday at 5:45. In addition to the Championship games, there will be a special Sportsmanship Awards ceremony at 2:45 on Saturday. The kitchen will have plenty of hot dogs, pretzels, chips and drinks so come by and settle in for the day at the St. Francis Christmas Tournament.
