When the season ended in the Rockaways, summer rental bungalows and rooming houses were prepared for the long winter ahead.

Gas mains were turned off, gas lines bled off with stove and heater valves left open to air out, water mains and lines were drained with traps and toilets filled with oil to maintain a seal, and electric power turned off and locked out from utility pole transformers.

Upper windows were sealed and locked, with lower floor windows and doors boarded up. In today’s View we see a Rockaway trademark in one of the many rental places: mattresses rolled up on a bed near a window!
